The asylum interview
USCIS changed several rules on Aug. 21, 2026. If you have a pending affirmative case, these dates matter.
Evidence: 14 days ahead
Submit all evidence to the asylum office 14 calendar days before your interview. Late evidence may be excluded, or the interview may be rescheduled, which can affect your work permit.
Rescheduling
You must now show exceptional circumstances to reschedule. USCIS no longer sends a failure-to-appear warning. If you miss the interview without asking to reschedule (before the date or within 10 calendar days after), USCIS may dismiss the application or refer the case to an immigration judge.
Biometrics
If you miss your fingerprint appointment, you must request a new one within 10 calendar days and show exceptional circumstances.
Prepare
The interview is under oath. Your testimony should be consistent with your application and evidence. If you need an interpreter, check USCIS instructions early.
